About Stax

Stax.ai is transforming retirement plan administration. We turn the complexity of managing retirement plans into a seamless experience for Third Party Administrators (TPAs), shipping quickly, building durably, and staying ahead of the industry. Our engineering team is small, fast-moving, and AI-forward — we believe in using the best tools available, including AI, to build better software faster.

The Role

We're looking for a Software Engineering Intern to join our engineering team for a 12-week summer program. This isn't a side project internship — you'll work on real features and infrastructure alongside our full-time engineers, shipping code that TPAs across the country rely on every day.

You'll be embedded in our 2-week cycle process from day one: picking up issues in Linear, opening pull requests, participating in code reviews, and demoing your work in cycle retrospectives. By the end of the summer, you'll have meaningful contributions to production systems on your resume.

What You'll Work On

Depending on your interests and the team's priorities, your work could span building features in our Next.js frontend or Go backend services, writing and improving API endpoints, contributing to infrastructure tooling on GKE and MongoDB, helping migrate legacy services into our new architecture, writing tests and improving documentation, and exploring AI-assisted workflows that accelerate engineering velocity.

Our Tech Stack

Go, TypeScript, Python · Next.js, Solid.js, Tailwind CSS · MongoDB, PostgreSQL · GKE, Docker · Linear, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Datadog · Claude, GPT models, AI-assisted code review

You don't need to know all of these — but you should be excited to learn them.

What We're Looking For

  • Currently pursuing a degree in CS, Software Engineering, or a related field

  • Familiarity with at least one of Go, TypeScript, or Python

  • You've built something — class projects, side projects, open source, hackathons

  • Strong communication skills — you can explain your thinking and ask good questions

  • Curiosity and a growth mindset — excited to learn, not afraid to be wrong

  • Comfort with AI tools — you see Claude, Copilot, etc. as leverage, not a crutch

Bonus Points

  • Experience with Go or Next.js/React

  • Familiarity with Docker or Kubernetes

  • You've contributed to open source or maintain a personal project

  • Interest in fintech, retirement planning, or regulated industries

Interview Process

Our process is respectful of your time and focused on real work, not trick questions:

  1. Recruiter Screen — 30-minute conversation about your background and interests

  2. Take-Home Project — A practical coding exercise relevant to real Stax work (no LeetCode)

  3. Technical Interview — Walk through your project, extend it live, talk through your thinking

  4. Final Interview — Chat with the Head of Engineering about values, growth, and team fit

AI tools are welcome at every stage. We care about how you think, not whether you memorize syntax.

Why Stax

  • Your code ships to production and is used by retirement plan professionals nationwide

  • Modern stack — Go, Next.js, Kubernetes, AI tooling — not legacy enterprise software

  • Small team, big ownership — no ticket factories, you own features end to end

  • AI-forward culture — we embrace AI tools as part of our workflow

  • Mentorship — paired with a senior engineer, regular 1:1s with engineering leadership
